Japan, Radiation Dangers, and Iodine / Iodide Supplements

Fears of a “radiation plume floating into your backyard?”

Unlike the fears of potential nuclear meltdown in Japan, it’s best for us to act upon the correct information.

Before loading up on potassium iodide and heading for the hills, please take a calm look at our present situation. The latest mainstream press reported that we will NOT likely see any spikes in ionizing radiation on the United States west coast by this friday.

The radiation in Japan is happening at 5,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level. That radiation would have to be carried by the jet stream which is at 30,000 feet to reach the U.S. Mainland or other Pacific Islands for that matter.

Here is one of the latest news Titbits from Business Week (excerpt):

Workers Prepare to Connect Power to Stricken Nuclear Plant

March 18, 2011, 12:45 AM EDT

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it may finish reconnecting a power line to the cooling system of the No. 2 reactor today, where white smoke or steam was observed wafting above. The power link would be used to restart pumps needed to pour cooling water on overheating fuel rods. If that is successful, power may be restored to reactors 3 and 4 on Sunday, Tepco said. Radioactivity has declined to safe levels for workers, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said…

Please visit and bookmark RadiationNetwork.com. home of the National Radiation Map, depicting environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute.  This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the (mainland) USA at any time…

As you see at Radiation Network, radiation levels remain at consistently safe background levels throughout the US West Coast. But better safe than sorry – please monitor this site on a regular basis.

How Does a Nuclear Melt Down Work?

It also helps to know a little better about what is happening technically at the power plant. Please see the following article excerpts from Physorg (March 17, 2011 by Lisa Zyga):

Japan’s cooling problems

When the earthquake struck Japan, three of the six reactors (Reactors 4, 5, and 6) at the Fukushima power plant were already off for routine inspections. Earthquake tremors triggered the automatic shutdown of the other three reactors, Reactors 1, 2, and 3 (along with eight other nuclear reactors at other power plants). To stop the chain reaction, control rods that absorb neutrons were inserted in between the fuel rods…

Japanese officials have stated that radiation around the nuclear reactors has risen to the level where it would adversely affect a person’s health. Officials have implemented a 20-km (12-mile)-radius evacuation zone, and have advised people to stay indoors. The US has told its citizens living in the area to stay at least 50 miles away from the power plant. Some people have been taking prophylactic iodine as a safety measure; consuming this non-radioactive iodine before exposure to radioactive iodine can fill a person’s thyroid and hopefully prevent absorption of the radioactive variety. Fortunately, westerly winds have so far blown much of the radioactive material out to sea…

Prevention

All of this means that We’re OK for NOW, but we’re also no worse off than after BP’s Gulf Disaster. The effects of toxins in our environment including ionizing radiation happen over the long term; it’s the same as bringing a live frog slowly to the boil. All kinds of chronic ailments and crippling diseases like cancer take years to manifest without proper preventive measures.

We take on all kinds of toxins everyday as researched at Poison Spectrum; for this reason, I am so glad that people are beginning to wise up about health supplements.  One supplement in particular is running in short supply.

On my last trip to my local Vitamin Shoppe just a few days ago, I couldn’t find anymore kelp or any iodine supplements. They were all gone. I figure there are a few smart people in my city or someone hogged them all.

I would like for you to know that there is no need to hog the iodine supplements. What we should all be doing is sticking to a regular dose of 50 mg a day. Here’s an excerpt from a page that I published at Nutrition Spectrum years ago that teaches us about thyroid nutrition. If you were wondering what amount to take to stave off the effects of ionizing radiation on your thyroid, please read:

  1. Goiter and cretinism are evidence of extremely severe iodine deficiency, because the smallest intake of iodine that would prevent these conditions, that is 0.05 mg per day, is 1000 times less than the optimal intake of 50 mg elemental iodine.
  2. The thyroid gland has a protective mechanism, limiting the uptake of peripheral iodide to a maximum of 0.6 mg per day when 50 mg or more elemental iodine are ingested. This amount therefore would serve as a preventive measure against radioactive fallout.
  3. An intake of 50 mg elemental iodine per day would achieve peripheral concentration of iodide at 10-5M, which is the concentration of iodide markedly enhancing the singlet triplet radiationless transition. Singlet oxygen causes oxidative damage to DNA and macromolecules, predisposing to the carcinogenic effects of these reactive oxygen species.5 This effect would decrease DNA damage, with an anticarcinogenic effect.
  4. Preliminary data so far suggest that orthoiodosupplementation results in detoxification of the body from the toxic metals aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury.
  5. Orthoiodosupplementation increases urinary excretion of fluoride and bromide, decreasing the iodine-inhibiting effects of these halides… (continues at thyroid nutrition)

Therefore, there’s no need to wait for a nuclear disaster to take iodine supplements. 50 mg a day not only helps to protect your thyroid gland; it also helps in detoxing us from everyday poisons spread by dirty industrial practices. There’s also no need to overdose.

Organic, natural sources of iodine provide the most bioavailability such as kelp. When you see a dose of “660 mg” like on the Nature’s Way brand, please check the actual amount of iodine you’re getting on the label.

If you are taking a 500 mg dose of iodine, you need only one dose every 10 days. Isn’t that simple?

Thank you for taking time to protect your health and that of your loved ones.

Healing thoughts,

Randolph Directo

How to use Iodine Tincture for Worst Cast Scenario (excerpt from KI4U):

In an emergency, if no more KI tablets available here, you can topically (on the skin) apply an iodine solution, like tincture of iodine or Betadine, for a similar protective effect. (WARNING: Iodine is NEVER to be ingested or swallowed, it is poison to drink.) For adults, paint 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm each day, ideally at least 2 hours prior to initial exposure. For children 3 to 18, but under 150 pounds, only half that amount painted on daily, or 4 ml. For children under 3 but older than a month, half again, or 2 ml. For newborns to 1 month old, half it again, or just 1 ml. (One measuring teaspoon is about 5 ml, if you don’t have a medicine dropper graduated in ml.) If your iodine solution is stronger than 2%, reduce the dosage accordingly. Absorption through the skin is not as exact a dosing method as using the tablets, but tests show that it will still be very effective for most. More about the above at Plan B, along with formulas there for mixing up potassium iodide (KI) solutions if you acquire KI powder or crystals. Do not use if allergic to iodine. There are also a few other medical conditions and medications, discussed there, that are contraindicated that your physician can best advise you about. Inquire of your doctor NOW if there is any reason why anybody in your household should not use KI, or iodine solutions topically on their skin, in a future nuclear emergency, just to be sure…
